GMC Truck Project Gets Fuel, Wiring & AC Installed

Bud Dovey wants all the modern connivances in his vintage 55 GMC truck. Now that we have the GM EROD LS engine mounted; all of the required “support systems” are the next installment in our “Cool old GMC Pickup” series.

The fuel system was probably the simplest part of this chapter of our build. A beautiful aluminum fuel tank was ordered, however the tank must be modified to work with the EROD engine’s fuel injection system. The modifications include welding in the required fittings for fuel return, sending unit and most importantly the “in tank” mounted high pressure fuel pump.

Once the tank is mounted between the frame rails, the simple yet time consuming task of laying out the Aeroquip “Starlight” fuel lines and required AN fittings can be completed.

Vintage Air provided a very compact combination “underdash heating and A/C unit” that was mounted under the dash on the passenger side of the GMC’s cab.

The controls were mounted in the dash to provide a more “factory” appearance.

The Optima battery, sending unit wiring, and computerized ECU mounting was completed next.

Probably the most difficult part we show in this chapter is the installation and fabrication required to install the pedal assembly to use the “computerized drive by wire” setup that is part of the EROD LS engine package.

The next chapter will show fabrication of the exhaust and completion of all the wiring inside the cab.
